If your simcard isn't seated properly in your iPhone, due to a dmaged or misplaced simtray, then your iPhone may be reporting that you need to insert a sim card in order for the iPhone to operate correctly. Simcard tray problems can occur through improperly seating the simcard into the simtray. or through general wear, or even through liquid damage.
